These cells are a distinct subset of T lymphocytes that play a role in immune responses, particularly in maintaining tissue integrity and responding to stress signals. The Vγ5Vδ1 TCR is uniquely expressed on a population of T cells called dendritic epidermal T cells (DETCs) that reside in the epidermis (PMID: 35260830, 35031803).
